background

The administrative seat of the Saint Ann district is a small town. Columbus named the place Santa Gloria. On the sea side, part of the bay was filled in, so that there was space for a wide thoroughfare. Since then, the A. G. R. Byfield Highway has carried all through traffic past the village, with remnants of to the west of the village Seville la Nuevo, the first settlement on the island, which took place in 1509 by the Spanish conquerors. Saint Ann's Bay was also protected by a fort. The first fortification was built around 1750 west of the village. Stones from Seville la Nuevo were used for this. But as early as 1795 the facility had to be abandoned because it was regularly flooded by the sea. A new fortification was built on the opposite side of the bay at Windsor Point. Until recently, the fort was used as a prison and hospital, most recently the local slaughterhouse was located there, since the last severe hurricane there are only ruins. On the eastern edge of the village, a large new building area for villa-like houses has emerged on the site in recent years the former Drax Hall Plantation. Only a few meters further the road forks. Inland there is a winding road towards Spanish Town and Kingston. On the coastal road you drive past the Dunns River waterfall to Ocho Rios. On the sea side is the polo field of Drax Hall. Behind the next street curve you have it Mammee Bay reached, 4 km from St. Ann's Bay, even if you can't see the sea. Almost all of the land there is privately owned. High, wrought iron gates separate the street from a villa complex from the 1960s. Only a few meters further, an avenue of palm trees leads to the former Playboy Hotel, today it belongs to the Sandals Group. The former sugar cane plantation Drax Hall was founded in 1669 by William Drax from Barbados. In the 19th century it was over 1,000 hectares in size. After the end of the slave era, coconut palms were planted and cattle were raised. Large tracts of land were sold in the last century and the Roaring River is crossed not far from Mammee Bay towards the Dunns River. On the plantation of the same name there is another waterfall similar to that of Dunns River. For many years there have been plans to make this accessible to the general public. Around 2½ km west of St. Ann's Bay you drive through the small town Priory. There is also a small, public beach with no infrastructure.
