Sainte-Anne is a city in Martinique.

background

Ceramic finds suggest an indigenous Indian population who lived there as early as the 4th century. European settlement began after 1502 when the first salt pans were built there.

The municipal boundary of Sainte-Anne is just behind the town of Le Marin. The municipality covers the entire southeastern peninsula. There are several parts of the community there. The two main streets run parallel to the water front.

In 1690 there were about a dozen sugar cane plantations and a chapel was built for the 700 residents. In 1730 the place became an independent parish. In addition to salt production and sugar cane, lime was also burned. It was needed both in sugar processing and in construction. In the early twentieth century the area was known for the quality of its sheep and the abundance of its wildlife. In 1969 the last sugar factory in the region closed. Today no sugar cane is grown there, they live exclusively from tourism.

The former sugar cane plantations (habitation) have now partially completely disappeared, only the name of the district indicates this. Of the 18 habitats from 1822, only eight have survived: Habitation Baie des Anglais, Habitation Caritan, Habitation Petit Versailles, Habitation Malgré Tout, Habitation Salines Blondel, Habitation Beauregard, Habitation Crève-Cœur and Habitation Val d'Or.

There is a fish market at the port and a fruit and vegetable market nearby. There are also handicrafts offered to tourists. Sainte-Anne is the second largest tourist center in the south of the island. You can find a pharmacy, bank, bookstore and post office in a very small space. Buses and taxis leave from the square in front of the church, there are also public toilets. The area is said to have the longest sunshine and the best beaches on the island.

Today the 273 hectare facility is classified as a historical monument.
  • Habitation Val d'Or. The Habitation Val d'Or originated in the middle of the 18th century. It is owned by the widow Monel and the von Rougerie family, who also own the Caritan habitation. In well-preserved finds, you can even see the annual rings if you cut through the “wood” and polish the interfaces. In the extreme south of Martinique, the savannah turns into a volcanic plateau. It encloses about ten hectares with an average height of 10 meters. From there you have a beautiful view of the sea at La Pointe d'Enfer.

trips

Hike through the Savane des Pétrifications on the southern tip of the island. Pointe des Salines - Grande Anse Macabou - the total length of this hiking route is 28 km, which corresponds to a hiking time of 8 hours. It is therefore advisable to hike only parts of the route. It is 4½ km from Anse Caritan to Grande Anse des Salines. It is 5 km from the Grande Anse des Salines road to Anse Trabaud, crossing the Savane des Pétrifications. It is 6½ km from Baie des Anglais to Cap Chevalier, here you have to go far inland to avoid a mangrove swamp. It is 7 km from the road at Cap Chevalier to the path at Pointe Macré and from here to Grande Anse Macabou again 5 km.

From Anse des Salines there is another gravel road to the campsite opposite the Ilet Cabrits, on which there is a lighthouse, then the path leads through the Savane des Pétrifications to Anse Trabaud, where there is another piece of gravel road. From here the footpath branches off to the Baie des Anglais. From Cap Chevalier, the hiking trail now always leads along the sea to Anse Macabou. Because of the strong sunlight you have to wear a hat and take plenty of water with you.
