  • Trois-Rivières distillery. Tel.: (0)596 625178, Fax: (0)596 623213. In 1661, under the reign of King Louis XIV, Nicholas Fouquet was given 5,000 hectares of land between Sainte-Luce and Trois Rivières for his services. The same king accused him in 1664 of wasting public money, all his possessions were confiscated and in 1680 he died in prison. Today the plantation only has a size of 600 hectares and only 120 hectares of it are planted with sugar cane, which makes up 80% of the raw material of the distillery, the rest is bought by a few small farmers. The sugar juice is fermented in 14 steel tanks with a capacity of 33,000 liters each. The annual production is over 1 million liters of 65-72% -gem rum. It is then transported by tanker to Fort-de-France for further processing. Until 1975 the rum was marketed under the brand name M. Aubrèy. In 1976 the global group Martini & Rossi bought two companies on the island: Les Rhumeries Duquesnes and Trois Rivières, since then around 440,000 bottles of rum have been bottled annually under the brand name Trois Rivières. During the harvest season from February to June, the distillery can be visited, then guided tours take place.
