Saintes is a french City in the department Charente-Maritime in the region New Aquitaine.

It is the capital of the Arrondissement of Saintes and the administrative seat of three cantons.

The city was called around 20 BC Mediolanum Santonum founded by the Romans. The city was built on the banks of the Charente River and was on the Roman road Via Agrippina.

So the name doesn't work saint (Saint) but goes back to the Celtic santons that populated the area before the Romans.

One possible route of the Camino de Santiago is via Saintes.

The city may take the title ville d'art et d'histoire wear.
