4 km north of Saint Joseph, the village of Salisbury stretches from the coast for several kilometers along the road that leads inland. The district of Baroui was called by the Carib Indians. For a long time the houses consisted only of unplastered stones and wooden beams. The Catholic Church was not completed until 1929, and recently it was renovated. Part of the population lives from fishing. It was only between 1950 and 1960 that banana growing brought some wealth. For a few years there were even banana steamers in the bay. In the 1980s, the place then expanded north.
The original settlement of the Carib Indians was on a flat piece of land near the sea, at today's cemetery. Today's grave excavations have found broken fragments and utensils used by the Indians, so that their settlement could be precisely localized.
