Salvador da Bahia(full name: Sao Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos), the state capital Bahia, with its 2,948,733 inhabitants (2008) is the largest city in the northeastern region by Brazil.
Understand
Salvador is the third largest city in Brazil in terms of population, after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Salvador was the capital of Brazil until 1763. The city owes its name to the fact that the Portuguese entered the bay on All Saints' Day in 1501. This bay is therefore called All Saints Bay (or Bahia de Todos os Santos). The first settlement was built on a steep hill overlooking the bay with its harbor. This location was chosen for its good defensibility, because in the early days the city suffered a lot from attacks by Native Americans and European competitors. Salvador has been from several times Recife attacked by the Dutch, who briefly captured the city between 1624-1625 and 1646-1647.
