background

Out and about on Samsø

Samsø is one of the Danish islands in the Kattegat and lies between the east coast of Midtjylland, the north-west coast of Zealand, and the island of Funen in the south.

getting there

There are two ferry connections to Samsø:

  • of Kalundborg on Zealand to the new ferry port Ballen on Samsø, which opened in 2015, crossing just under an hour and a half: SamsøFaergen
  • of Hou (south of Odder) on Jutland to Saelvig on Samsø, crossing approx. one hour: SamsøRederi

The Hou ferry port on the Danish mainland is around 170 km from the German-Danish border near Flensburg. The journey time by car from there is about two hours via the E45 motorway and from the city of Horsens via the state roads 451 and 445. From the city of Aarhus it is only 30 km to Hou.

By train from Germany, we recommend taking one of the continuous ICE from Hamburg to Aarhus. There are also other connections with transfers in Flensburg and Fredericia. From the station forecourt in Aarhus, there are few direct buses on line 103 to the ferry in Hou, at all other times of the day you have to take line 100 to Odder and change there. The travel time from Aarhus to Hou is about an hour: Midtrafic

From the capital, Copenhagen, the distance to the ferry port in Kalundborg is around 100 km. The travel time on the main roads 21 and 23 is about one and a half hours. There are also direct connections with regional trains every hour from Copenhagen Central Station via Roskilde to Kalundborg, the ferry leaves from there in close proximity to the train station.

Currently (as of 2018) there are discounted prices for ferry crossings in Denmark outside the main season, which almost halve the price for both passengers and vehicles.

mobility

Most visitors to Samsø explore the island in their own car via the few, well-developed main roads and the many small back roads between the villages. There are enough parking spaces available and free of charge. You should adapt to the island's pace and drive comfortably.

Bicycling is not difficult on Samsø - aside from the weather, perhaps. There is a well-developed cycle path next to the main road that leads from Ballen in the south via the main town Tranebjerg to Mårup in the north. Furthermore, cycling on the streets of the island is not a problem even for inexperienced cyclists because of the low traffic on all roads. It should be noted, however, that there are small hills here and there and that agricultural traffic is on the way. There is also a bike rental service with several rental points: Samsø Cykler

There is a bus line on Samsø that connects all places with each other. There are eight journeys in each direction every day during the summer holidays. Otherwise the bus runs mostly during school hours. The buses also stop at the ferry port in Saelvig during the day with coordinated connections to the ferry to Hou. Outside the regular bus service (rutebus) there is an on-call bus (telebus): Samsø bus

There is also a taxi provider on Samsø, and from the small airfield in Stavns you can even order an air taxi from Samsø, e.g. to Aarhus.
