background

This is the main island and the seat of administration. San Andrés is 12 km long and 3 km wide, with an area of 26 km². In the center of the island there is a small lake: Big Pond. The main town in the north of the island bears the same name as the whole island, but is only called “El Centro” by the locals. La Loma is a smaller village in the center of the island, where the descendants of the indigenous people live. The Baptist Church, built in 1847, is on the main street.

The town of San Luis on the east coast has a beautiful white sand beach and some tourism.

The hill “La Loma” is around 120 m high. From there you can see the whole island. The 30 km long main road leads around the island.

In 2000 the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

There are some uninhabited small islands nearby. Cayo Johnny (also Cayo Sucre or Johnny Cay) northeast of the northern tip of German Point or Punta Norte. In 2001 the island was converted into a nature park. So-called beach cedars prevent the erosion of the shoreline. You can go snorkeling or diving there.

Haynes Cay is about the same distance off the east coast. It is an island made of coral limestone with palm trees. There is a restaurant on the island, but you can also grill yourself.

Cotton Cay is less than 1 km south of the town of San Andrés.

history

Columbus is said to have discovered the island on his fourth voyage. Dutch people are said to have been there at the end of the 16th century. From 1627, British settlers came to the island, Scots of Protestant faith who had first sailed to Barbados. But there were also settlers from Wales and Holland. Some sailed on from San Andrés to Providencia. From 1633, African slaves were brought here via Jamaica.

Spain was only able to occupy the archipelago for a short time. Between 1740 and 1787 it was wholly owned by the British. In 1792 there was a royal decree by which Guatemala made claims to the islands. The Catholic faith was introduced and a church was built.

In November 1802, the islanders demanded that they be subordinate to the Viceroy of New Granada and no longer be ruled by Guatemala. This happened in 1810. In the same year island administrators were installed on San Andrés and Providenciales.

In July 1818, Simón Bolivar's troops conquered the archipelago, which became part of Colombia from 1822.

Flora and fauna

94 species of birds have been counted on the islands. There are over 273 marine animals that inhabit the mangrove swamps and reefs, fish and coral species. San André is completely surrounded by reefs.

Mangroves - There are 12 mangrove areas on both islands. There you can find red, black and white mangroves, habitat of sea birds, lizards, crabs and mussels.
