  • Moltkewarte

The Moltkewarte observation tower stands on the summit of the Schlösschenkopf, a wooded ridge north of Sangerhausen near the town of Lengefeld. The 26 meter high tower was built in 1903 and 1904 at the instigation of the Harz Club Sangerhausen branch from Rogenstein. This particular type of limestone can be found in numerous places in the area around Sangerhausen.

The tower was named after the famous Prussian field marshal Helmuth von Moltke. This played an important role in the Franco-German War of 1870/71. In October 1904 the Moltkewarte was inaugurated and thus opened to the public. The observation tower fell into disrepair during the GDR era. An extensive renovation only took place in 1995 as part of a so-called "job creation measure".

Today the Moltkewarte is a popular hiking and excursion destination. From above you have a beautiful view of the southern Harz foreland with Sangerhausen, the Golden Aue and the Kyffhäuser Mountains. Unfortunately, the control room only has limited opening times - in the summer months (April to September) on weekends and on public holidays from around 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. / 7 p.m.

Work

Since the fall of the Wall, Sangerhausen has had to struggle with economic problems, especially due to the collapse of mining. The mechanical engineering industry that was once located here has largely disappeared. The place is the seat of the largest German bicycle manufacturer MIFA-Bike, which has a checkered history and currently mainly serves the budget segment of the market.
