The bus station (terminal) is located on the outskirts, approx. 5-6 km from the old town, approx. 1 hour's walk without luggage via Calle 41 and Avenida Ferrocarril. The blue city buses stop in front of the bus station and take you to the center (and further to Taganga).

As long as you live within the center, you can actually reach everything interesting and relevant on foot. Otherwise, you can take city buses (1,400 COP) that go to different parts of the city, or just take a taxi. If you take a taxi, it is best to agree the price with the driver before you set off; It shouldn't actually exceed 10,000 COP within Santa Marta.

The beach of Santa Marta is amazingly clean and invites you to swim - even though a port is around the corner and large ships are in sight. Otherwise, the small fishing village of Taganga in the north is a good destination for a bathing excursion.

The main shopping street is Carrera 5 parallel to the coast with many small shops and also large supermarkets. The corner of Calle 16 is a busy snack corner in the evenings.

Many budget accommodations are located on Calle 10 C, at Carrera 2, almost directly on the beach. The Calle 10C is, however, hard on the port district and therefore, unfortunately, quite unsafe.

  • Hotel Miramar, Calle 10C # 1C-59. You meet a lot of backpackers here, but it's not that clean.Price: double room ~ 20,000 COP.
  • Hotel El Titanic, Calle 10C # 1C-68. Directly opposite the Hotel Miramar.Price: Dorm bed ~ 10,000 COP.
  • Hotel Manizales, Calle 10b. Habitacion baño privado, with a fan but without flushing the toilet.Price: 20,000 COP.

The area north of Avenida Ferrocarril is unsafe and should not be visited alone during the day.

The entire city becomes increasingly deserted from sunset. At around 11 p.m. the massive police presence also disappears.
