Santiago del Estero is the oldest city Argentina and capital of eponymous province in central north Argentina. It lies in the valley of the Río Dulce una has together with the suburb La Banda about 350,000 inhabitants on the north bank of the river.

Despite its age, little has been preserved of its colonial old town. That is why the city is not particularly known as a travel destination.

background

Santiago del Estero was founded either in 1550 by Núñez del Prado or in 1553 by Francisco de Aguirre, which date is still controversial to this day. Nevertheless, it is undisputed that it is the oldest Spanish city founding in Argentina, which has been continuously inhabited to this day. However, it was the oldest Spanish settlement at all Sancti Spiritu, today's place Puerto Gaboto at Rosario (Province of Santa Fe) from 1527, which only existed for a short time.

As the capital of the province of Santiago del Estero, the city is a commercial and industrial center, but it is far less important than the one very close by San Miguel de Tucuman. In addition, the province is still the poorest in the country and has a gross national product that is closer to that of the countries of Central Africa than the Argentine average.
