Santiago de Chile is the capital of Chile.

Understand

The city spans approx 35 km. There are still a few colonial houses scattered around the city center, but in recent years skyscrapers have multiplied especially in the center and east of the city. Santiago is located in a basin at the foot of the Cordillera. Pollution is quite high there, especially in winter.

To go

By plane

Air France operates a daily non-stop flight from Paris-Charles-De-Gaulle, departure 23 h 30, arrival at Arturo Merino Benítez international airport at h 50 (D 1) summer time or 10 h 00 (D 1) winter timetable, duration 14 h 30 minutes.

From the airport, two bus companies transport you to the city center, to the metro station Pajaritos or the station Los Heroes.

The Los Héroes line serves the regional bus station Pajaritos (Pajaritos metro stop), long distance bus stations Santiago and Alameda (Universidad de Santiago metro stop), San Borja (Estación Central metro stop), Los Heroes (Los Héroes metro stop) as well as the train station Estación Central (Estación Central metro stop).

The Aeropuerto - Los Héroes bus route is served by the company Centropuerto. The departure station is on level 1, to the right of the exit, opposite gate 5. The service is provided every day from h 00 To 23 h 30 from the airport and from h 55 To 22 h 30 from Los Héroes. The frequency of shuttles is 10 min during the week and 15 min weekends and holidays. The journey time is approximately 45 min. The cost for a one-way ticket is CLP 1500.

By bus

Regional station Pajaritos (Pajaritos metro, Av. general Oscar Bonilla 5600), serves Valparaiso and Viña del Mar as well as Arturo Merino Benítez international airport.

Four bus stations provide interregional and international connections:

  • Alameda Terminal (Universidad de Santiago metro, Av. Bernardo O’Higgins 3750, tel. (56-2) 7762424).
  • Santiago Terminal (formerly Terminal Sur, Universidad de Santiago metro, Av. Bernardo O’Higgins 3850, 150 meters from Alameda bus station, tel. (56-2) 3761750).

Long-distance buses offer four types of seats: Clásico tiltable at 130 °, Semi cama tiltable at 140 °, It made me tiltable 155 ° and Premium tiltable 180 °.

Tur Bus - It is possible to consult the timetables and prices of this company on their website https://www.turbus.cl/wtbus/indexCompra.jsf, but unfortunately not to book from abroad because it is necessary to have a Chilean identity number and a Chilean payment card.
Best prices for Puerto Montt by Tur Bus (seen on September 5, 2015 for a departure on November 5, 2015): departures from Alameda terminal at 17 h 15 and 19 h 15, arrived the next day respectively at h 25 and h 40, price 9800 CLP in semi cama.

By train

Access to the train station Estación Central is done by metro line 1 or by the Aeropuerto - Los Héroes bus line (Estación Central metro stop).

By car

  • If you need to rent a car in Santiago, all the major rental companies are present at the Airport. To travel in the city you will necessarily need to go through the ring road (Avenida Américo Vespucio), it has become chargeable by a system managed on the internet, the lessor will offer to charge you for the ring road the number of days (not necessarily consecutive) that you will need. Once your car is registered, control is done by cameras on gantries, so no toll barrier.
  • Even if you rent a car through a "big" international rental company, you are strongly advised to check the condition of the car very closely, bodywork, tires, play in the steering ... Do not hesitate. to take photos of the car, showing that the photo was taken in the rental car's parking lot. In South America a rental car can be over 100,000 kilometers.
  • It is always prudent to visit Santiago at the end of the trip, so you can return your car a day or two before your departure by plane. As a result, you will be less stressed if there is a problem with the return of the car, and will have more time to discuss than if your plane takes off in an hour.
  • In the event of theft or damage, the rental company will retain a deductible for you, so it is preferable that at night in Santiago (and elsewhere) your car "sleeps" in a closed and / or guarded car park, you will find it everywhere.
  • The traffic in the center of Santiago is quite dense at certain times, prefer public transport which although crowded remains safer.

To learn

To buy

Very pretty jewelry made of lapis lazuli and silver. There is a craft market "feria Santa Lucia" to get there crossing the main avenue facing the hill of the same name.

In addition to lapis lazuli, Chile has another stone that some collectors want to buy: orbicular diorite. Although many mineral stores in the capital have it for sale (never in the window!) Be aware that the exploitation of this stone is illegal, the quarry which is located on a beach is protected and guarded. Buying orbicular diorite contributes to the plundering of the country.

Eat

Street vendors offer you a mote con huesillos, Chilean specialty. It is a decoction of peaches with sprouted wheat. Ice cream is delicious. Taste ice cream flavored with milk jam (manjar) or flavored with exotic fruits such as chirimoya alegre (custard apple) or lucuma (Pouteria lucuma is a tree in the Sapotaceae family, which produces a fruit known as lucuma in the Andes)

Have a drink / Go out

Santiago is rich in nightlife, one of the flagship activities is The Santiago Pub Crawl, which invites you to spend the evenings in the company of people from all over the world who are there for fun too. This is why the time of an evening with The Santiago Pub Crawl you go to three different bars and end the evening in one of the nightclubs of the city! This type of activity allows you to meet new people and have fun at the same time ...

To go out, the best place is the Bellavista Quarter, a bohemian district that is becoming more and more "bobo". 2 main streets: Pio Nono to drink a cheap beer on crowded terraces (not necessarily very well frequented, be careful with your business ...) and Constitución where there are mainly restaurants. In between: the Patio Bellavista with restaurant, small shops, pubs and bars with live music, especially not to go to Suecia street in Providencia, as some old guides recommend, the area has changed a lot, most discos have closed , and it became very poorly attended. Otherwise, an evening that brings back more than two thousand people, and this, by word of mouth, every Wednesday: the After Office ... Located on the top floor of a parking lot in full center of the city, it is the most "in" evening of Santiago ... inquire ... The national beer is Escudo. (escupo according to the daily joke, which means "spit", no doubts, it is very correct) Taste the Pisco Sour and the Vaina!
