Sarema - the largest island belonging to Estonia, located in the Baltic Sea south of the entrance to the Gulf of Finland, separating the Gulf of Riga from the high seas. It is separated from Hiuma by the Soela väin strait, and from the mainland by the Irben Strait. It is the largest island of the Saare Province. Its area is 2673 km² (91.5% of the provincial area), and the population is 39.2 thousand. (94.1%).
