background

getting there

One leaves the street of Ras Sudr to et-Tūr 6 km south of Abū Zanīma (Arabic:أبو زنيمة) Or 18 km north of Abū Rudeis (Arabic:أبو رديس, Also spoken Abū Rudīs or Aburdīs) 1 29 ° 0 '47 "N.33 ° 9 '46 "E onto a runway to the east. As a rule, this runway is only used by vehicles from the local mining company to transport the extracted sands. Since only a few stretches are paved, we recommend continuing with a jeep, pickup, etc. The further route is about 50 km long. At 2 29 ° 4 ′ 46 ″ N.33 ° 12 '46 "E turn right, approx. 1 km behind a group of buildings 3 29 ° 6 ′ 31 ″ N.33 ° 21 '15 "E if you branch off to the right again, later at 4 29 ° 4 ′ 7 ″ N.33 ° 23 '13 "E to the left and reaches at 1 29 ° 3 '30 "N.33 ° 26 '15 "E the Barakat Village for Camping. Another 1.5 km later the road comes to an end.

The local Bedouins are responsible for guarding the area. The names, dates of birth and the days of arrival and departure of the travelers are recorded in the Barakat Village for Camping.

At 5 29 ° 2 '42 "N.33 ° 26 '12 "E. the not so easy ascent on foot begins at a height of 535 m. The path consists partly of stairs and is approx. 3.8 km long. After about one kilometer you reach the archaeological site of Rōḍ el-ʿAir at 1 29 ° 2 '24 "N.33 ° 26 ′ 33 ″ E at a height of 642 m with its rock inscriptions from the 12th dynasty. After another 2.8 km you reach the Hathor temple of Sarabit el-Chadim at an altitude of 740 m. Since the path leads both up and down, you have to overcome far more than the calculated 200 m difference in altitude. It takes about one to one and a half hours to travel one way.

The path is partially signposted, but only in Arabic. The signs point to other sites in the vicinity.

The organization of the journey is not easy. There are tour operators whose Sinai tours also include Sarabīṭ el-Chādim. However, these tours are rarely requested and offered. Many Bedouins know the way, but cannot officially act as organizers, so you have to be privately mediated.

The owners of the Barakat Village Camp offer tours under “Falcon of the Desert”. You are on Tel. 20 (0) 100 260 0470, (0) 100 536 2435 and by email [email protected] reachable.

If you travel with a Bedouin or use the services of the local Bedouin, there are no additional costs.

The best times for the journey and hike are noon to afternoon. For the 8 km long hike, equip yourself with suitable clothing (shoes, headgear) and sufficient drinks.
