Sausalito is blessed with more fine dining than would be expected in a city of 7,000. Whatever food you prefer can be found in Sausalito. In the tourist-frequented parts of the city, a careful selection of the restaurant is recommended, because what is on offer often does not match the ambience and price level.

  • Fred's Coffee Shop, 1917 Bridgeway 332-4575. Fred's is an institution in Sausalito. It has served full American breakfasts and hearty American lunches since the 1970s. A peculiarity and a special charm at Fred's is that there are only 6 tables, each of which can seat 4 to 6 guests. Most of the time you have to sit at "your own" table with others, which often leads to interesting conversations. A table at Fred's has a metal plaque that says "Stammtisch" - anyone can sit there if a chair is free. On weekdays, the regulars' table in the morning is usually occupied by grumpy locals. Poor knights are at breakfast (French toast) to recommend. If you like it a little more spicy, you should ask for "Coyote Special", a cheese omelette with chilli.
  • Sartaj, 43 Caledonia St. 332-7103. Very little ambience but delicious traditional Indian food.
  • Sushi Ran, 107 Caledonia St 332-3620. One of the best sushi restaurants in the world Bay Area; Both incredibly fresh sushi and modern Japanese cuisine are served here.
  • Fish, 350 Harbor Dr. 331-3474. Excellent, very fresh and well prepared seafood. Cash only!
  • Arawan, 47 Caledonia St, 332-0882. Offers Thai cuisine.

nightlife

  • Cafe Trieste. With the branch Sausalito on Bridgeway, stands in the Bay Area for excellent coffee. Classic cyclist destination. Internet, live jazz music and artist shows.
  • Poggio, Bridgeway. Fine dining, but much better coffee.
  • Starbucks, Princess Street. Coffee as you know it from every other city.
  • Cafe DiVino, 37 Caledonia Street, (415) 331-9355 (Cross Street: Johnson Street). Street café, artist shows, live jazz music, locals.
