Sauteurs is a city in Grenada.

background

Originally the place and bay as well as the whole district were named St. Patrick's, after the second son of Governor Du Parquet. In 1654 64 Dutch traders who had fled Brazil settled there. On the site of today's St. Patrick's Catholic Church, they built the fortification Fort D`Esnambuc to protect against the Carib Indians.

According to legend, the last Carib Indians threw themselves there from a 35 m high cliff into the sea in 1651 in order not to have to surrender to the French. This place is also called Caribs Leap or Morne des Sauteurs (hill of the jumpers). This is how the fishing village got its current name.

beaches

  • Bathway Beach, south of Levera Pond. Bathway Beach is very child-friendly, it has a reef directly in front of the shore, so that you swim like in a bathtub.
  • Levera Bay. The 2½ km away Levera Bay in the north, on the other hand, has dangerous underwater currents, as the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean collide here.

getting there

In the street

The north coast of the island can always be reached via the coastal road, either along the Caribbean coast, through the towns of Gouyave and Victoria or along the Atlantic coast via Grenville. The road along the Caribbean coast is a bit busier, but better developed.

Tourist Attractions

  • Levera National Park, Bedford Point. With the remains of an old fortress. This northeastern tip of the island was an important trade route for the French to the French islands in the north. In 1772 they started building a small fortification with 6 cannons. Today the remains of the fort are on private land, but are to be made accessible to the public.
  • Levera Hill. In the southwest is the crater lake of an extinct volcano and the 258 m high Levera Hill. On the road from Grenville via Tivoli and River Sallee is the new Levera National Park Center with a restaurant, bar and a small exhibition as well as information about the hiking trails. There are hot mineral springs south of River Sallee, the River Sallee Boiling Springs. The nearby islands of Levera Island and Sugar Loaf can be visited with a rented fishing boat.
  • Lake Antoine. An almost circular, approx. 65,000 m² large lake in the crater of a former volcano. The water level is only 5 meters above sea level. In 1939 the lake was still 30 m deep, but it is slowly becoming shallower due to deforestation and agriculture. It is a 20-minute walk from the River Antoine rum factory.
  • River Antoine Rum Distillery, La Poterie. Tel.: 442-7109, 442-4537, Fax: 442-4538. It is located 15 minutes from the town center. This is the oldest rum distillery in the whole of the Caribbean, still using the centuries-old wood-fire and hydropower production methods that have been used since 1785. Today only 66 workers are active there. Guided tours are possible. For 8 US dollars you get a t-shirt and a bottle of rum.
  • Belmont Estate. Tel.: 442-9524, Fax: 438-0705. The Belmont Estate is located south of Sauteurs between the towns of Hermitage and Tivili. It is a 300 year old 170 hectare plantation in the northeast of the island. It was founded by the French Bernango family. After the island was conquered by England, it fell into the possession of the Scotsman John Aitcheson in 1763. After his death, the plantation was sold to the Houston family from London, who owned it for 170 years. In 1944 the local Nyack family bought the plantation. The Nyack's originally came from India, they are the owners to this day. At first coffee was planted there, later it became a sugar cane plantation. In the early 1800s, people switched to bananas. Today nutmeg and cocoa are still harvested there. The facility was only opened to the public in April 2002. There is a small museum there with historical furnishings and maps. A garden was set up between the Antoine River and the ruins of the sugar factory with parts of the old hydropower plants. There are guided tours of the plantation and there is also a restaurant there. The family cemetery from the 18th century is also accessible. After the devastating hurricane “Ivan” in 2004, the plantation had to be closed to the public for three years. Today the gates of the property are open again Sun - Fri 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
