The "Plains by the Sea" is the administrative seat of the Westmoreland district. The English founded the place there in 1730. The fort, which is located directly on the sea, has largely collapsed. One half is used as a bathtub by the children.

This wide, flat plain in the southwest of Jamaica is still the largest contiguous sugar cane growing area on the island today. In the harvest season, narrow-gauge railways and trucks bring the sugar cane to the factory in Frome, which is about 8 km from Savanna-La-Mar. The area around the city is home to the largest number of Indian contract workers who came and stayed in the country after the end of slavery. The brown raw sugar is shipped via the port of Savanna-La-Mar. The loading facilities are right next to the fort. The 1.7 km long Great George Street, the main street of the town, leads like a ruler from Hendon Circle in the north to the old fort at the harbor. The house numbers start there at the fort and at the north end, at the two petrol stations. About in the middle of Great George Street is the imposing courthouse from 1925. Across the street is Parish Church from 1905. Mannings High School, founded in 1738, is of historical importance. Due to a lack of local shopping, tourists from Negril and the Sandals Hotel in Whitehouse come here to shop. The turmoil is so great that some streets had to be turned into one-way streets.

Savanna-La-Mar is on the national road A 2which runs from Negril to Spanish Town. The county road B 9 brings motorists north via Grange Hill to Lucea. 8 km east of Savanna-La-Mar at the intersection of Ferris - petrol station - the county road branches off B 8 north and leads to Montego Bay.
