Scarborough is a city in Tobago.

background

In 1654 the Dutch reached Adrian and Cornelius Lampsins the island of Tobago. They founded a place they called Lampsinsburg and secured it with a fortification. In 1677 it was the French vice admiral Jean Graf d'Estreeswho had this fortification reduced to rubble by the guns of his ships.

In 1748 the French came across the island Martinique to Tobago. English followed them off Barbados. Scots then founded Scarboro after Alexander Brown came to the island as Lieutenant Governor in 1765. In 1769 the place became the island capital and was given its current name. Fort King George was built to protect the place. During the French occupation between 1781 and 1793 it was renamed Port Louis. In 1790 there was a riot among the French occupation soldiers. Scarborough was almost completely burned down in the course of the uprising. Only a few warehouses by the harbor, the port authority building and a few houses on Carrington Street remained.

In 1816 all buildings in the area of the market square were demolished in order to use it as a public square. In 1821 the foundation stone for the courthouse and post office was laid. Colonial Bank opened its doors in 1837. The first hospital was founded in 1856. There has only been a power supply since 1952. The deep-water port was opened a year later. There has been a regular ferry connection with Trinidad since 1960.

The eastern part of the city with Main Street, Upper Scarborough, is located on a steep slope. The western half is called Lower Scarborough. The largest shopping complex there is the NIB Mall. Two opposite, slightly rounded buildings with three floors. Unfortunately, there are no sensible indications through which stairwell which shop can be reached, on the other hand, the range of shops is so uninteresting for tourists that a visit is hardly worthwhile.

Four streets form Lower Scarborough. They run north-south between the Claude Noel Highway and Milford Road - Carrington Street. Starting at the Botanical Gardens, these are Gardenside Street, Wilson Road, Dutch Fort Street and Sangster Hill Road.

From the new cruise ship complex behind the NIB Mall, on the other side of a small square, is the completely oversized, bunker-like concrete block of the post office. It is no longer used as a post office and should be torn down. Bus tickets are available from a tiny counter. These leave from an ugly concrete shelter, like the mail lying next to it. Tourist information and post offices have moved to a new address in the cruise ship complex.

In 1980 Tobago was given self-government again, the island parliament moved in again and in 1985 the house was renovated. James Park is in front of the courthouse on the harbor side. On the former market square there is a statue of the late Minister A. P. T. James and the memorial to commemorate those who fell in the two world wars.
  • Fort King George, Fort Street. Tel.: 639-3970. The English built this fortification in the years 1777–1779. Two years later the French were able to retake Tobago and occupied the fort until 1793. During this time it was renamed Fort Castries. About 400 slaves were used to build the high fortification wall. After Tobago was finally given to the English in the Peace of Paris in 1814, 600 soldiers and 20 officers were stationed at Fort King George. In 1847 a hurricane also destroyed parts of the fort and tore off the roofs of all buildings. A year later the fort was rebuilt. In 1854 the soldiers were withdrawn from Tobago. Two years later, the old military installations began to be used for civilian purposes. The military prison became the island prison, other buildings were converted into the first island hospital. A water reservoir was built there in 1926. In 1958 a lighthouse was built at another location. The 3,000 watt beacon can be seen 50 km away. In 1965 the whole complex became a park.
