Floating Islands (Peru) - Schwimmende Inseln (Peru)

The floating islands in Peru are for the most part on the Lake Titicaca. The people there live in a low standard of living. There is no electricity or water pipes on the islands.

General

The floating islands in Peru are artificially composed of reeds. Often there are no more than five households on an island. There is of course no infrastructure on the approximately 70 m² islands.

to travel

Traveling to floating islands is difficult. Because the supply is scarce and the demand keeps increasing, prices skyrocket and the service deteriorates. A maximum of one night's stay on a floating island is possible per holiday and only with a tour operator who does not even take care of the entry into Peru.

getting there

The journey to Peru takes place by plane. Then it goes on land routes by bus or train to Lake Titicaca. Ferries run to the islands. You only drive on behalf of the tour operator.

overnight stay

The expensive overnight stay (if booked at all) takes place in a separate hut. The comfort is more than simple. But you learn more about the everyday life of the islanders. A trip with an overnight stay (excluding travel) costs 160 dollars.

language

As the residents (almost) only speak Quencua, good communication is not possible and knowledge of English is essential (because of the way to get here).
