Sergiev Possad (Сергиев Посад) is a city of Moscow province, and a city of Golden ring, famous for its Troitse-Sergiev Monastery, which is to the Russian Orthodox as well as the Vatican is for Catholics.
To arrive
By train
Trains run every 30 minutes from Moscow's Yaroslavsky train station to Sergiev Possad. The station is located at Komsomolskaia metro station (red line). A ticket to Sergiev Possad costs 132 rubles (common train, 90 min, 2011 price) and 181 rubles (Express train, 5-6 times a day, 60 min). It's perfect for a day trip outside of Moscow.
By bus
Bus 388 is available at VDNKh (VVTs), metro station VDNKh, for 120 rubles. Departures every 15 minutes. However, be aware of frequent and prolonged traffic jams at MKAD to Pushkino, always at peak hours.

The main tourist spot is the monastery. It can be seen from the station, and reached on foot in about 10 minutes.
Look
The reason you must see the city is the monastery. Officially the Lavra da Trindade and São Sérgio, is one of the most beautiful monasteries in the country and one of the main spiritual centers of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a combination of a fortress and a monastery. The Russian Orthodox Church seminary is located in the buildings of the complex. There are several churches to see, a sacred fountain and in general the entire complex, with its massive walls and gates, is very picturesque. There is no admission price to pay, except for the museum, which showcases ancient religious objects and embroidered images of saints. On weekends the monastery can get very crowded as it features some very important icons (at least copies of them). On the other hand, it can be very interesting anthropologically to observe believers kissing icons and praying for hours.
The tomb of Boris Godunov (from Pushkin's play, Mussorgski's opera, and Russian history), and some members of his family, is also here.
