Sheki (Şəki, pronounced: "Schäki;" Russian: Шеки) is a city and administrative seat of the district of the same name in the north Azerbaijan on the southern flank of the Caucasus, which reaches heights between 3000–3600 m in the surrounding area. It is located 325 km away from Baku on the river Kiş.

background

The settlement history of the region can be traced back 2700 years. Originally located higher in the mountains, today's Kish (Kiş) was destroyed by floods in 1716 and 1772. The present settlement was founded in the 1740s as a fortress of Nukha, with which the Khan Haci Çələbi made himself independent (ruled 1744–53). The place name was kept until 1968, under which it can be found in Brechts Caucasian chalk circle Mention.

Snow can be expected in January and February.

A decision on the entry of the Khan Palace on the World Heritage List was postponed by UNESCO in 2017.
