Shirahama (白 浜 町) is a city in the Japanese prefecture Wakayama.

background

getting there

By plane

There is an airfield (flights from Tokyo-Haneda).

By train

The train station is a bit outside of Shirahama, but you can get to town quickly by bus, taxi or bike (<5km).

We recommend the express train from Osaka - Shin-Osaka to Shirahama, the train takes about 2.5 hours and costs 5250 yen.

If you want to start from Osaka (city), first drive to Tennoji and then get on the express train that comes from Shin-Osaka.

Coming from Nagoya, it is better to travel via Shin-Osaka, as the train connection along the sea takes too long.

In the street

There is also a bus service from Osaka (JR Osaka Station). This is the cheapest connection for those who want to save money. The cost is 2700 yen per direction for 6 connections a day (reservation required!).

By boat

mobility

The JR counter in the train station rents out bicycles for 500 yen per day. Return until 6 p.m.

Tourist Attractions

  • Sakino yu onsen, about 1 km from the main beach of Shirayama. One of the oldest mentioned onsen in Japan.Price: Entry 300 yen.
Rock cliffs
  • Sandan Heki. Steep rock cliffs further south of Sakino yu Onsen.
Shirara-hama beach
  • Shirara hama. The local beach is more reminiscent of the South Pacific than Japan. Clear blue-turquoise water with fine white-yellow sand. The whole thing is protected by the offshore reefs and a beautifully landscaped stone wall.
Engetsu-to
  • Engetsu-to Island. Close to the mainland there is a rock with a hole in the middle.
  • Adventure World. Theme park with panda bears and dolphins as an attraction.

activities

  • Diving. There is a diving school near "Engetsu-to" and you can practice in the shallow water.
  • Kait surfing. A bend in the rock is a beautiful beach where you can practice it. However, one should always pay attention to the rocks that are slightly under water.
  • To go for a walk. Since everything in the village is so close to each other, it is easy to move around on foot. It is particularly worthwhile to linger on the steep slopes at sunset.
  • Excursion by boat to "Engetsu-to Island". You can see the rock very well from the beach, but of course there is also a boat that will bring you closer to the rock. A tour takes about 10-15 minutes, whereby there is nothing special to see that cannot be seen from the land.
Hot foot bath
  • Walk with a hot foot bath. You can't miss the foot bath, right next to the beach.
