  • The famous Madara rock relief: The "Horseman of Madara" is located 13 km east of Shumen and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Pliska is a ruined city northeast of Shumen and was the capital of the 1st Bulgarian Empire from 681-893. It has been abandoned since the 14th century. Today the foundations of some palaces as well as churches and houses can be seen there.
