Siana is a street village in the mountains in the south of Rhodes. It is a destination for numerous tourists who stop here with their cars and buses. This is particularly due to the small shops that offer local products. Well-known and famous are, for example, the thyme honey and the souma, a pomace schnapps that is very similar to grappa, but natural. In the shops you can of course also try what is common in Rhodes. That is what makes it so special.

Siana is on the road from Kritinia to Monolith. If you don't come by coach, but with your own car, you should arrive in the morning or at noon, because the coaches usually don't arrive until the afternoon.

In addition to the small shops with local products, the imposing church is worth a visit. You should also go into the church and take a look at the interior. But you shouldn't do this in shorts and strappy T-shirts, knees and shoulders should be covered. Not to do so would be an insult to the Greeks. A small donation is also common, so please do not take photos with flash, there is enough light in the church to take good pictures even without flash. By the way, the clocks on the church towers are only painted on. One is not quite sure what the times shown mean. One should be the time of the first service in the church.

Right next to the new church is the old Sianas church. The cross was only put up a few years ago. Before that, the building would certainly not have been identified as a church. Here you can see the difference between the past and the present very nicely. Such churches can be found all over Rhodes.

As already mentioned, there are a number of shops in Siana that offer local products. In addition to the suoma and honey, there are mainly spices and products made from olive oil. When you walk into a shop like this, you are initially overwhelmed by the smell. The mixture of hundreds of aromas is simply too much for a nose.

The shops are full of products, olive oils, some of which are flavored, soaps made from olive oil, spices that I have never heard of, natural sponges and also the things that tourists like to buy. You shouldn't let that distract you. There are also a few other small shops.

Of course, there are a few taverns in Siena that offer Rhodian cuisine. There is no big restaurant. But the taverns are good for dining, they are cozy and well equipped.

nightlife

The night life takes place in the small taverns. The residents of Siena sit here and loudly discuss what is happening in the village. There is also beer, wine and retsina and of course Suoma and Grappa. Foreigners are rare here in the evening, so you come across the well-known Greek hospitality.
