Regions

Circo de gredos in the Parque Regional

The Sierra de Gredos is a Scheidengebirge and so the north and the south differ significantly in climatic terms. The areas to the north are much rougher and cooler, spring sets in here much later, i.e. if you come from the south in May, for example, where the cherry trees are already developing fruit and most of the deciduous trees are in full bloom, you will still be surprised in the north by largely bare trees. The fruit trees to be found in the south, especially cherries, are completely absent in the north, where livestock is predominant.

A large part of the Sierra de Gredos is made up of the one located exclusively in Castile-León Parque Regional 'Sierra de Gredos' (span.) Subject to a certain protection, the park has a size of 86,236 hectares and was established in 1996.

places

  • Arenas de San Pedro
  • El Arenal - The Rio Arenal runs along the edge of the village. From the main bridge you can walk upstream as well as downstream along the cascade-like waterfalls which, especially in times of high water, lead down the valley with a roar, forming numerous small pools and eddies.
  • Candeleda
  • Mombeltrán
  • Hoyos del Espino - The village on the north side of the mountains is itself quite unspectacular, due to its location at the entrance to La Plataforma However, it ensures a lot of tourism with the appropriate infrastructure, especially in the area of the access road. In addition, at the beginning of this access road there is also the northern information center of the regional park with a large parking lot - the Casa del Parque Pinos Cimeros (only open on weekends outside the main season).
  • El Barco de Ávila

Other goals

  • La Plataforma - A good 11 km long road leads from Hoyos del Espino through beautiful mountain landscape to the parking lot La Plataforma (The last 4 km are subject to a daily toll on weekends and in high season). This is the starting point for tours into the high mountains, including the extremely popular tour to Laguna grande and the one located there all year round Refugio Elola (Duration approx. 4.5 - 5 hours there and back, the path can still be snow-covered in mid-May!). It is also worth doing only part of the tour, and you are guaranteed to see Gredos ibex at the end of the valley.
