places
- Arnarstapi lies on the southern coast below Snæfellsjökull.
- Buðir, on the edge of the Buðahraun lava field, used to be a fishing center. Today the place mainly consists of a small church and a hotel. And here there is a “white” sandy beach with a dune landscape, rare on Iceland. Shortly before reaching Buðir (in a westerly direction), small rivers rushed to the right of the mountains towards the sea. The most beautiful is the Bjarnarfoss. He falls down a steep rock face.
- Hellnar
- Ólafsvik
- Stykkishólmur is the largest place on the peninsula.
Other goals
- With the ferry from Stykkishólmur to the Westfjords.
- Continue on the R 57 along the coast in a north-easterly direction.
background
The Snæfellsnes peninsula is also called mini-Iceland. You can find all types of landscape here that can also be found in the rest of Iceland. On the south side there is an agriculturally used green belt and on the coast there are long beaches and cliffs with interesting basalt formations. The north of the peninsula is more like the southeast coast of Iceland and the West Fjords. The middle of the peninsula consists of a mountain range up to 900 meters high and is dominated in the western part by the 1446 m high Snæfellsjökull. This volcano, which has a small glacier cap, was active until about 2000 years ago. In the eastern part of the mountain range is the Tröllatindar with a height of 930 m.
getting there
Of Borgarnes coming via the R 54.
