background

getting there

By plane

By train

  • 1  railway station, Dzidzariya St. 81.

A long-distance train now runs at least every two days (even daily in summer) (306C) to Moscow (Arrival: 4.52 a.m. the day after next), which is operated by the Russian railway company RŽD. This always leaves at 2:05 p.m. from the new station in Abkhazia and stops on the Abkhaz side Nowy Afon, Gudauta, Gagra and Zandripsch. The journey to Moscow is 42 hours and the price is 33 3,330 (3rd class) or 5932 (2nd class) or ₽ 11,660 (1st class). (As of April 2019) Current departure times and the entire route can be viewed at www.tutu.ru or www.rasp.yandex.ru; the RŽD website, however, does not offer the train connection.

In summer, the line also runs daily, only in summer 480C to St. Petersburg, Departure between 7.30 and 8.30 p.m. (varies, see the above websites for current times), arrival 56 hours later; the prices here are 5232 (3rd class) and ₽ 8984 (2nd class).

It should be noted, however, that the fare for train connections within Abkhazia is above average. A ticket for the route from Sukhumi to Gagra (travel time> 2 hours) costs 765 ₽, while the slightly faster Marshrutka connection costs just 200 ₽. In this respect, use on short journeys is only recommended for real train fans. Tickets can be bought both online and on site at Sukhumi train station, but they may sell out early - it is therefore advisable to buy them as early as possible in advance.

Incidentally, you can also buy train tickets in Sukhumi Eagle buy, which offers a much better route network within Russia. Buses, trains and marshrutkas run to Adler. It should be noted that every border crossing in Psou to Russia - especially on the train - violates Georgian law and makes future entry into Georgia with this passport difficult or impossible.

There are currently no other rail connections for people in Abkhazia, in particular the routes south of Sochumi are out of service.

By bus

  • 2  Bus station, Dzidzariya St. 81.

The main means of transport in Abkhazia are marshrutkas. These drive from all parts of the republic to Sukhumi and usually stop in the forecourt of the station, where there is also a small station building with notices of departure times. Alternatively, the drivers there are happy to help. Connections are cheap and regular, at least during the day between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. At night you are primarily dependent on private transport. According to the notice, the following connections currently exist (as of April 2019), whereby the times should be viewed as a recommendation - we often set off as soon as the marshrutka is full:

  • Otschamtschira: 11.30am, 1.40pm, 3pm, 3.30pm, 4.30pm, 4.30pm, 5pm, 5.20pm, 6pm, 6.30pm.

  • Nalchik (Russia): 10.40.
  • Rostov (Russia): 15.15 (not daily), Price: 1400 ₽.

Marshrutkas regularly travel to Sukhumi from both the Psou border (with Russia) and the Ingur border (with Georgia); from Ingur, however, you have to change to Gal.

In the street

By boat

mobility

Within Sochumi you can move around on foot without any problems, especially the extensive pedestrian paths and parks in the coastal area invite you to stroll. Otherwise Sukhumi is accessible through marshrutkas, and there are also city buses (10 ₽ per trip, to be paid to the driver when leaving the bus) and (orange) trolleybuses (5, same procedure), which are ancient and accordingly slow. The trip is still an experience that takes you back to Soviet times.

The building is partially accessible, with numerous stairwells and corridors being unsecured. Currently (since 2015) it is completely covered by a banner with the Abkhazian flag, at least on the outside.
  • 3  former Amra restaurant, Naberezhnaya Makhadzhirov. This jetty at the harbor leads into the sea, previously (until 2018) the Amra restaurant was located here on two floors. Today the site is deserted, but freely accessible. The kitchen area in particular can still be seen clearly. There is a private small boat harbor behind the restaurant, but it is not accessible.
