Worth seeing

  • castle in the Dniester arc - a stone fortress built on a circular plan with a diameter of approx. 37 m by the Moldavian prince Stefan III the Great in 1489 and expanded in brick form by Piotr Raresz after 1543. In 1692 it was taken by the Polish army under the command of Stanisław Druszkiewicz, the castellan of Chełm. Then it was manned by the Polish crew of Krzysztof Rapp. At that time, the moats were deepened, casemates for ammunition were built, the courtyard was filled, the embankments were strengthened and a new quadrangular well was dug, which modernizations allowed the Polish crew to repel a six-week siege of Turkish troops in 1699. The Poles left the fortress after the Karłowice Peace. It was besieged again in 1711. In 1739, the castle was burnt down by the Russians.
  • candle - a monument of gratitude (Mold., Roman. Luminarea recunostintei). Świeczka, a 30-meter-high monument, is built on a rock by the Dniester River, which separates Moldova from Ukraine. The construction of the monument was completed on April 24, 2004.
  • Gypsy district - located on a hill dominating the city and consists of impressive palaces built around a narrow, winding uphill street.
