background

The southern part of the island is about 48 km long and around 2,500 people live there. A little infrastructure can only be found on the eastern coastal strip. The island's main road, the Queen's Highway, runs around 40 km along the coast. In places the roadside is only marked by pink and white mussel shells.

Although there are some very beautiful beaches in this part of the island, tourists are rather rare. At the northern tip, at the pier of the ferry coming from Mangrove Cay, there is a public telephone, a cluster of buildings, Driggs Hill with Emerald Beach, a palm-lined sandy beach and hotel, 2.8 km from the pier.

South Andros Airport in Congo Town is 6½ km from the pier. The place Congo Town, which is also called Long Bay by the locals, consists of the main road and a narrower road by the sea. There are several connecting paths running at right angles between the two streets.

The first bigger place The bluff, located 4 km south of Congo Town. The headquarters of the administration, police station, post office and telephone are located at the southern end. From there it is another 3 km to the center of High rock. A street settlement that stretches for 3 km on the main road.

14 km south of the airfield you reach the second larger town in South Andros, Kemp's Bay. Another street village that stretches 4 km. From the end of Kemp's Bay you drive another 1½ km to the bridge over the Deep Creek, a watercourse that cuts deep into the land. Here you could go south with a fishing boat in a large curve and then on Little Creek to reach the main road again. Both bridges are 5 km apart by land.

Behind Little Creek you can find almost nothing but uninhabited land. To the southernmost place Mars Bay it is 9 km.
