background
The island is almost 10 km long, in the north less than 1 km wide, the south is almost circular with a diameter of about 5 km, the total area is just over 20 km². The highest point on the island is 46 m above sea level. The main town is Cockburn Harbor on the southwest coast. There is a natural deep water harbor there. The island's main sources of income are the export of mussel meat and lobster tails. The fish processing and freezing facilities are one of the island's attractions. The salt lake, which is 2 by 2 km in size, begins behind the village. Cockburn Harbor Airport is located on its north side. An asphalt road connects it with the place. All other roads are unpaved sand paths.
During World War II, the Americans built a submarine tracking and surveillance station on the island.
The Highlands Estate is great for bird watching.
The island is one of the most popular drug trafficking centers in the south of the Bahama chain.
Every year in May, the South Caicos sailing regatta takes place in East Harbor.
In September 2008 the two hurricanes “Hanna” and “Ike” caused severe damage on the island. It took five weeks to restore the power supply.
