Spoken languages
In Catalonia and in the Valencian community (but also in Balearic Islands), Catalan is spoken. In the Valencian Community, this language is called "Valencian", a variant of the Catalan language. Also Spanish (here referred to as Castilian) is commonly spoken in these regions. In tourist regions it is also possible to communicate in English, but a Spanish phrasebook will certainly come in handy in less traveled areas.
The Spanish dialect of Murcia is clearly spoken in Murcia. The only exception is the small mountainous area known as El Carche, where Valencian (Catalan) is the primary language.
