General information

Between 1387 and 1814 Norway was basically just a Danish province. The official language and that of the upper classes in the cities was Danish. This is why the "book language", also known as the "imperial language" (bokmål or. riksmål), very similar to Danish except for a few sound shifts.

The grammar is - compared to German - relatively simple. You can start from the following basic rules:

• The indefinite article stands before the word who certain is appended at the end: en man = "a man", men = "the man", en kvinne = "a woman", kvinnen - "the woman", et board = "a table", boards - "the table".
• no distinction is made between masculine and feminine words (Article en); the neuter article is called et.
• Verbs are not flexed. In the present tense, a verb is the same in every person and usually ends in -he.
• Nouns in Plural end on -heif there is no special plural form. The definite plural article is called in all forms -ene (less common -a): man - menn (Special form) mennene = "the men", bordered = "the tables".
• As in English, only words at the beginning of sentences and proper names are capitalized.
• Except for the king and other respected persons, the salutation "you" is common (pronounced "düh").

pronunciation

In addition to the two official languages ​​(bokmål is the variant that is more widespread with around 80%) Norway affords around 250 dialects -Almost every valley, every region has its local variations in vocabulary and pronunciation. For a brave speaker this has the advantage that the pronunciation will be correct in any of the dialects. Unfortunately, this does not make the listening comprehension of Norwegian native speakers any easier.

The Norwegians are a very grateful people; thank you for something on all possible occasions. But there is no direct equivalent for the German "Please". You have to do this in a suitable manner rewrite:

• The easiest way is to add the word "thank you" to a question or request: Får jeg _____, takk ("I will get ____, please", fohr jä-i ____, tack).
• otherwise one uses the phrase "vær så vennlig" ("Be so friendly", while scho ifli) or "vær så snill" ("Be so nice", while snill)
• If you offer something or enough something, the formula is "vær så god" ("be so good", while scho guh).

Don't forget: always thank you!

• Thank you very much: mange takk! (short tack)
• Thanks a million: tusen takk! (do tack)
• Thanks (for the last meeting): takk for sist! (tack fohr sist)

Discussions with the police and authorities

Please adhere to the (strict) traffic rules! The fines even for minor traffic violations are exorbitant by German standards, and the police officers do not engage in major discussions in German, English or Norwegian.
