General information

Finnish is one of the Finno-Ugric languages, which also includes Hungarian and Estonian. Finnish is spoken by about five million people on earth, in Finland.

Finnish is also very different in grammar from other languages in Central Europe, so it is often called a little exotic felt. However, there is a certain similarity to Estonian and (Naturally) also to Hungarian.

The pronunciation of the alphabet corresponds to German (i.e. A. will like A. pronounced, etc.). The "vowel-consonant ratio" is 1: 1, which is why most words are relatively easy to pronounce (e.g .: Suomi - Finland, Jääkaappi - refrigerator, Kaksikymmentäkaksi - 22).

The Finnish alphabet corresponds to the German with the small difference that the "Y" is pronounced like a "Ü" (therefore the "Ü" is omitted in the alphabet) and the so-called Swedish A (Å)(pronounced like "O") is included in the alphabet (after all, Swedish is the second official language).

Some letters appear almost exclusively in foreign words ("B", "C", "F", "Q", "W", "X", "Z"). Other letters, however, are pronounced a little differently (e.g .: "V" is mostly pronounced like "W" [wee]; the combination of "D" or "T" and "H" is pronounced like "chd" or "cht": Lahti - [lachti]).

Finnish knows 15 cases, which are added as endings to the end of the word. This is how the strikingly long words are created (e.g .:

huoneessa - in the Room,
Liisall - For Liisa,
aamulla - at the Tomorrow,
maanantain / A - at the Monday,
saksaa - German (Language),
itävaltalainen - Austrian (Nationality),
suomesta - of Finland).

There are no articles in Finnish. Nouns are also not divided into genders (male, female, neuter).
