General information
The Dutch language belongs to the group of Germanic languages and is closely related to German. Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands and northern Belgium. Flemish is to Dutch like Austrian German is to German, so it has some peculiarities, but is otherwise considered part of the Dutch-speaking area. There is also a certain chance of hearing Dutch on the street in the Dutch Caribbean islands (some of which are English-speaking), in Suriname and perhaps in some parts of the French department of the North.
pronunciation
The pronunciation is relatively close to the German one. The Dutch tend to pull words together more than Germans. This makes the actually spoken Dutch much more difficult to understand than the written one. I pull hem (about: ick see hamm, I see him) therefore turns into one ksi-m.
As usual in Germanic languages, the stress is usually on the first syllable. Dutch sometimes differs from German, for example it is Queen's Day Koninginnedag on gin stressed. Maastricht one emphasizes about the last syllable.
Vowels
Unknown to Germans are some doubts (diphtongs), especially that ij (sometimes too y written). For example, it comes at the beginning of the river name IJssel in front. In a word like wijn you can see that it originated from a long i, as well as the German word Wine (from the Latin vinum). It is spoken more like "äi" (or as in English day, hay) out. Incidentally, the combination will egg pronounced as well. Dutch speak of long ij and from the short egg.
The ij sounds similar ui (sometimes too uy), namely like a very open one öi. A tuin So (garden) will töin pronounced, a huis (House) like hey. In terms of linguistic history, it often corresponds to the German one ouch or eu, as in voertuig (Vehicle).
Otherwise it should take a long time ooi know as in word mooi (in German: beautiful). Germans tend to be too short here too Oso it is mistakenly like oi listens. The connection ou, known from the city name Gouda cheese, is the German ouch.
The Dutch u becomes like the German one ü pronounced. The Dutch city would be called in German Ugly write. On the other hand, if a Dutch person wants to write the rarer sound that the German calls u (as in Unna) knows, then he writes oe. The Dutch place Doetinchem in German maybe as Duhtin-chäm to be written.

- e

Consonants
Characteristically, Dutch knows the Ach sound (as in German: Brook) both at the beginning and at the end of a syllable: Gouda cheese, Maastricht, laugh, zeggen. He will either G or ch written. The z is actually like the German soft s (as in blessed, Dutch: numerous) pronounced, but many Dutch (i.e. the inhabitants of the west) make it a sharp one s. The Dutch s however, it should always be pronounced sharply: Salt pompom.
Otherwise, there shouldn't be any problems for German speakers, albeit that r be a tip of the tongue and that l the Cologne l should resemble.

Long and short syllables
In contrast to German, a very clear distinction is made between long and short syllables, between open and closed syllables. This is very important when pronouncing, because with the many monosyllabic words, the meaning can quickly change completely if the word is pronounced incorrectly. Germans tend to pronounce the syllables too short.
Closed syllables (Syllables that end in a consonant) short pronounced if they only have one vowel / vowel: z. B. "van" (fann = from). There is no doubling of the final consonant as in German.
Open syllables (Syllables that end in a vowel / vowel) become long pronounced when they have a double vowel (or ie): e.g. B. vaan (fahn = flag).
The final -e is an exception. This always will short (like an unstressed ö) pronounced. To get a long vowel, the "e" must always be doubled, e.g. B. ze (sö = unstressed she) and zee (see = the sea, sea)
A stretch h as in German does not exist.
A double a, e or O is always long. Germans tend to say that aa in couple (Horse) too short to pronounce. The sea one speaks with a closed long eeh, not like Germans uh. Simple vowels should usually be pronounced briefly.
-tje
The final syllable has a truly inflationary occurrence -tjewhich means something like "-chen" or "-lein" in German. -tje can be added to any noun - and often will be. This also happens in cases where a German speaker would never think of it. This is how you buy een treinkaartje naar Utrecht ("a train ticket to Utrecht"); een lekker etentje ("A delicious meal") could well have been an opulent five-course menu and also een leuk huisje ("a nice house") doesn't really say anything about the size of the house. Usually it is more a question of personal attitude and nuances.
If you want to write orthographically correctly, it is sometimes difficult for Dutch people to know exactly how the final syllable is affixed.
For language learners this has -tje the advantage of being a word automatically het-Word makes. Then you can't go wrong with grammatical gender. However, if you were to deal with all nouns in this way, it would also seem rather strange for the Dutch.
