Vietnamese is the official language Vietnam. It is also found in countries where many Vietnamese emigrants live, e.g. Tie United States and Australia. Vietnamese grammar is very simple: nouns and adjectives have no gender and verbs are not conjugated. Vietnamese is a tonal language, the meaning of a word also depends on the pitch in which it is pronounced.

pronunciation

The written language is more or less phonetic and resembles the Portuguese spelling, on which the written language is based. Once you understand the correct pronunciation of each letter and tone, you can pronounce practically any word right the first time.

It should be noted that the pronunciation in the north, in the middle and in the south of the country is sometimes very different. The northern dialect is the easiest to learn because the written language is based on it.

Vowels

a
Like 'a' in "Vater ": ba.
ă
Like 'a' in "Vater ", but very briefly: chăn.

Like 'a' in "hat ", but shorter: sân.

Like 'ä' in "jÄH": che.

The consonants are usually spoken as in English, with a few exceptions:

Sounds

There are six different pitches in Vietnamese, five of which are represented with a special additional character to the main vowel of a syllable. Tone marks can be combined with other diacritical marks.

a
Normal tone. Medium pitch, will rise or fall.
á
Rising tone. Starts high and climbs again. Example: đấyhow to use english "day?" pronounces.
à
Falling tone. Starts deep and sinks a little more.
ã
Broken rising tone.
ả
Falling, rising tone. Starts normally, then decreases and increases again a little.
ạ
Falling broken. Starts deep, sinks very deep and is spoken rather briefly.

Idioms

Here are some common idioms in order of importance.

Basics

Preliminary remark: There is no actual form of address such as "you" or "you" in Vietnamese; the form of address depends on the relationship and the age difference between the speaker and the listener. Many idioms can be used without a salutation, e.g. B. May the question How are you? literally as Healthy or not? to be translated. However, omitting the salutation is considered impolite (except for subordinates), but with foreigners you turn a blind eye.
