Worth seeing

The city, due to its ancient history and monuments, is included in the UNESCO list.

  • Great Mosque - from 851;
  • ribat (821)
  • medina - inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list
  • Archaeological Museum, which was created around the two main courtyards of the Kasbah. The best collection of mosaics in the country - after the Bardo Museum in Tunis - has been collected here. The pride of the collection is the Triumph of Bacchus, depicting the Roman god of wine driving a chariot at the head of a satyr parade, and numerous scenes of fishing. In other rooms, items found in a Punic grave discovered under the museum are housed. An artist works here permanently, presenting the art of arranging mosaics, which requires extraordinary patience and accuracy.
  • catacombs, whose corridors of 15 thousand. the tombs of Christians from the 4th and 5th centuries are 5.5 km long. Unfortunately, only a small section (100 m) of the Catacombs of the Good Shepherd, named after the inscription "bon pasteur" (good shepherd), is open to visitors. Most of the tombs have been walled up, and only a few have a glass cover through which human bones can be seen.
