Sibiu (rum. Sibiu) is a real pearl of medieval and baroque architecture, a city imbued with the spirit of Western culture, always being the most important cultural center Transylvania (Romania).
Characteristic
The city has approx. 155,000 inhabitants and was the cultural capital of Europe in 2007.
It has a charming old town surrounded by well-preserved medieval fortifications. The center of the old town consists of three interconnected squares: the Big (Piata Mare), Little (Piata Mica) and Huet. There are several churches at these squares, the most important of which is the very interesting Protestant parish church, which received its present architectural form around 1520. Another characteristic building of Sibiu is the baroque church erected in 1777 Brukhental Palace with a characteristic greenish color, currently houses an interesting collection of Western European Baroque paintings. Other characteristic elements of the old town are the characteristic town hall tower erected in the 13th century (Turnul Sfatului) and a medieval, very picturesque staircase (Pasajul scarilor). An element of purely Romanian culture is the impressive and representative metropolitan church of St. Trinity.
