São Jorge is an island in the central group of the Azores. Its area is around 237.5 km². It has a length of 53.5 km and a width of 6.7 km. From the neighboring island Pico is the west of the island Terceira located São Jorge separated by the approximately 15 km wide Canal de São Jorge. With its elongated, narrow shape, which essentially consists of a mountain ridge with heavily eroded cliffs, it differs significantly from the other Azores islands, which are mostly round to oval. The highest point is 1,053 m high Pico da Esperança. The population is around 9,000.

The name of the island is derived from Saint George.

The steep coast means that bathing opportunities (similar to on Madeira) are not exactly sown in abundance. The map shows some bathing spots, mainly on the south coast, but also in the Fajã dos Cubres, the Fajã do Ouvidor and the Faiã do João Dias on the north coast.
