The journey from Austria is easy and problem-free. Through Slovenia and Croatia in the direction of Serbia, it is best to mainly use the motorway which continues in Serbia until shortly before the Bulgarian border. You can't actually get lost. There are five motorway tolls to be paid along the entire route. In total, the amount is approx. 40 euros (= €). In Bulgaria there is a general vignette requirement for all roads! (The monthly vignette costs around 12 euros). There are good petrol stations along the Serbian motorway, where paying in euros is no problem.
