Norwegian Phrasebook - Taalgids Noors

It Norwegian has two official standard languages: Bokmål and Nynorsk. The Bokmål (the word bokmål consists of the parts bok (book) and mål language); book language) is the oldest and most widely used, albeit more in eastern than in western Norway. Nynorsk (New Norwegian) is mainly used in western Norway and is based mainly on western rural dialects.

Grammar

Nouns

Norwegian, like German and Dutch, has feminine, masculine and neuter words. The big difference with Dutch and German is that the definite article (de/het) does not come as a separate word before the word, but after it as a kind of ending. The indefinite article works just like in Dutch, but then there are other forms for the different genders.

verbs

Norwegian verbs are very simple, because there is only one conjugation for all persons. The present tense of a verb is made by putting an -r after the whole verb.

eg. å ha (to have)

jeg har : i have
du har : you have
their har : she has
han har : he has
vi har : we have
dere har : you have
the har : they have

In addition to the (for us usual) 26 letters, the alphabet has 3 "extra" letters:

æ , ø and å

You can obtain these "extra" letters as follows:

æ = alt 0230 Æ = alt 0198 | æ = alt 145 Æ = alt 146 | æ = ctrl alt z = shift ctrl alt z
ø = alt 0248 Ø = alt 0216 | Ø = alt 157 | ø = ctrl alt l Ø = shift ctrl alt l
å = alt 0229 Å = alt 0197 | å = alt 134 Å = alt 143 | å = ctrl alt w Å = shift ctrl alt w
