Tajikistan is divided into 3 administrative districts (vilayets) and one autonomous district. The capital of Dushanbe has special oblast powers.

According to official data from 2010, Tajikistan had over 40 cities with a population of over 10,000. residents. The country's capital, Dushanbe, was the only city with over half a million inhabitants; 1 city with a population of 100,000 ÷ 500,000; 3 cities with a population of 50,000 ÷ 100,000; 9 cities with a population of 25,000 ÷ 50,000 and the rest of the cities below 25,000 residents.
