Taitung 臺 東 市 is the capital of Taitung County in Taiwan. Next Hualien it is the second largest city on the east coast of Taiwan.

Taitung is home to various minority groups such as the Hakkas and Hoklos. The settlement by the Chinese came late and was largely driven by the connection to the railway network during the time of the Japanese occupation.

Tourist Attractions
- Liyushan. The carp hill is located in the middle of Taitung. If you fight your way over the neglected paths to the summit you have a wonderful view over Taitung. Beware, since not many visitors come to the hill, there are quite a lot of queues near the paths.
- Dragon Temple and Phoenix Pagoda. The temple complex is located at the foot of the Liyushan. Highly recommended.
- Seashore Park. This modern park is located right by the sea, in which various artists showcase their skills.
- Taitung Railway Art Village. After the new station, which is located outside Taitung, was inaugurated, the old station and the remains of the rails were converted into an open-air museum. Here the old mixes with new art.

Cycling, swimming and hiking nowhere else in Taiwan can you combine these three activities as well as in Taitung. The south-east coast, which is not as steep as the north coast, invites you to swim in the Pacific. The mountains in the hinterland offer hot springs and rice fields. [1]
- Islands. Taitung is the best place if you want to Green Island (Lyudao) and the orchid island (Lanyu) and don't have the time to spend the night on the islands. From here ferries run daily to both islands. From the harbor, which is a bit away from Taitung in Fugang, various boats also go to whale watching or snorkeling.
- Sansiantai. Three craggy coral rocks are said to be the proof that Lu Tung pin, Li Tie-guai and Ho Hsien-ko of the eight immortals of Taoism were once on their trip to this island and thus earned it the name of the three immortals. Sansiantai is a popular tourist destination so it is usually quite crowded.
- Water that flows upwards. A reporter is said to have found this phenomenon by chance while traveling near Taitung in Dulan. Meanwhile, the optical illusion that leads one to believe that a small river flows uphill has become a tourist magnet and the stopping point for many coaches.
- Hot Springs. There are various hot springs in the area around Taitung, the most famous one in Jhihben.

The food in Taitung is a mix of the many influences of the immigrants who settled here. Of course you should eat fresh fish, in the restaurants at the harbor you can get it fresh from the fishing boat. Various Italian restaurants can be found along coastal road 11.
In Taitung you should definitely try fresh fruit from the fields in the area. The highlight here are certainly the cinnamon apples, for which the region is the main growing area.
The Taitung Night Market is held Thursday through Sunday on Zengqi Road near Carrefour. You should try the fried fish, the Mega Takoyaki Ball and the steaks here. The prices are well below the usual night market prices.

Taitung is very quiet and apart from a few small bars has hardly any nightlife.
