The Tarija Department is the southernmost department Bolivia and is located in the transition area between the highlands (Altiplano) and the Chaco plain to the east. The center of the department forms a high valley in west-east direction, in which the capital Tarija is also located.
Culturally, it is already influenced by Argentina, according to the residents, that they actually prefer to be Argentinian rather than Bolivian. Economically, it is one of the richest regions in Bolivia thanks to its large oil and gas reserves.

The influence of Argentina can be seen in the language. In Tarija you hear the so-called most often voseo, i.e. replacing the tú (You) through vos (an old Spanish form of courtesy).
