Chernozem is the exceptionally fertile belt of "Black Earth" located in Russia ofEurope along the border withUkraine, famous for its rich, deep and black soil. Its cities are best known in the West for the vital importance they played as a battlefield at the turn of World War II, including the Kursk tank battlefields. Despite its enormous importance in Russian history, and its central location in the heart of European Russia, there are relatively few tourist attractions, as much of the area's architectural heritage was destroyed during the second World War. Therefore, this is an off-the-beaten-track destination in Russia for independent travelers looking to stay deep in the “real” Russia.
