Teterow is a city in the Mecklenburg Switzerland.

background

Teterow is embedded in landscape and nature reserves, surrounded by rolling hills, forests and glittering lakes - the geographical center of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The place name comes from Slavic and means "Auerhahnort" (derived from the Slavic word "teter", which means either "Auerhahn" or, more likely, "Black Cock").

The small town in the middle of Mecklenburg Switzerland has a well-preserved medieval town center, with lovingly renovated houses, two Gothic town gates, the old town church, the market square with the Hechtbrunnen and the historic Mühlenviertel.

At the gates of the city is the Teterower See with the Burgwallinsel - a former Slavic settlement. The island can be reached by ferry or the “Regulus” barge.

Teterow is also called the Schilda of the North. The story of the pike, the crazy church or the horse's egg, the pranks of the ancients have made the city famous far beyond its borders. And even today the old stories are ubiquitous. Whether for the pike festival on the weekend before Pentecost, in the local city museum or at numerous other places in the city, the visitor encounters the traces of the shield citizens everywhere.

The Teterower Bergring - one of the most beautiful grass racetracks in Europe - has been attracting thousands of motorsport enthusiasts to the ring every year at Whitsun since 1930 to experience exciting motorcycle races.

Churches

An Evangelical Lutheran Church, a Catholic Church, a New Apostolic Church and an Evangelical Free Church Congregation can be found in Teterow.

This is a stone witness to the city's history 1 St. Peter and Paul ChurchSt. Peter und Pauls Kirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaSt. Peter und Pauls Kirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsSt. Peter und Pauls Kirche (Q2327478) in der Datenbank Wikidata. It took a good 200 years from the laying of the foundation stone in 1215 to complete completion - the reason for two different architectural styles. While the chancel with the sacristy on the north side was built in the late Romanesque style, the nave and the tower are already Gothic. Significant in terms of cultural history: the carved altar (14th century), the ceiling paintings in the chancel (around 1350), the Gothic triumphal cross and the baroque prospectus of the organ. Anyone interested in the building history and information on the renovation of the church can find detailed information in the publication " Teterow - Building history and renovation of the city church St. Peter and Paul "published by the city in cooperation with its renovation agency (can be obtained from the tourist information office, among others).

Castles, chateaux and palaces

In the Teterower district Teschow (Slav. Place of Tesec) is the former Manor house of the von Blücher family. The current building dates from the first half of the 19th century. A previous building is already recorded on the map of the directorate from 1765. The forge, the bakery and the old school were also built in the 19th century. In 1904 the estate was bought by Max von Blücher and was owned by the family until 1945. In 1945 the Red Army occupied the village including the manor house. After their departure, refugees were housed there. The house was inhabited until 1995. The parish nurse's office and the parish room were also located here. In 1996 the manor house and the park were sold. Today the historic building has generous extensions and houses a castle hotel. The park has been restored. In addition, an extensive golf course was created.

Buildings

The Teterower, built in the neo-baroque style 2 town hallRathaus in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaRathaus im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsRathaus (Q2406625) in der Datenbank Wikidata can look back on a very eventful history since its inauguration in 1910. Originally built as the seat of the city administration, it housed a.o. the Soviet occupation command, the district administration and the police station, before the city fathers were able to repossess their house in 1990.

The two dating from the 14th century are evidence of brick Gothic City gates. Originally it was a double door system. However, the front gates were demolished over time, so that today only the main gates remain. While that 3 Rostock GateRostocker Tor in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaRostocker Tor im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsRostocker Tor (Q2167890) in der Datenbank Wikidata in the interior is not expanded, were in 1839 in 4 Malchiner gateMalchiner Tor in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaMalchiner Tor im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsMalchiner Tor (Q1886939) in der Datenbank Wikidata Four prison cells each set up on two floors, which were in use until 1945. Today it houses the city museum.

In the middle of the historic city center, right behind the church, is the lovingly renovated Mühlenviertel with old town mill, mill pond and fire brigade house. While the former watermill now houses a restaurant and an exhibition floor after renovation work, the volunteer fire brigade runs a small museum in the fire brigade syringe house.

Monuments

Burgwallinsel

Not far from the city, in the middle of the Teterower Heidberge is located cenotaph - a memorial for 300 members of the Teterow parish who died in World War I. Erected in 1927, the simple structure represents a sword that was rammed into the earth with the blade as a sign of peace. From the viewing platform of the memorial, the viewer can enjoy a wide panoramic view of the Mecklenburg landscape when the weather is nice.

A monument of a completely different kind is that Burgwallinsel in Teterower See. The first evidence of settlement goes back to the 3rd millennium before our time. The city and its surroundings were later strongly influenced by the immigration of Slavic tribes, which Teterow - Slavic Auerhahnort - also owes its name to. On the Burgwallinsel in Teterower See, a castle was built in the 9th century, which was the center of settlements on the southern and southwestern shores of the lake. Accessible via a 750 m long wooden bridge, which could be quickly dismantled without a nail in the event of impending danger, it offered the settlers excellent protection. Today the gem in Teterower See is a popular destination for locals and guests. You can go to the island by ferry or with the “Regulus” barge. There is a hiking trail, an adventure playground, a natural swimming area and the Hotel Burgwallinsel with a restaurant and a small water sports center.

Schlitz Castle

One of the most important classical palace complexes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the 5 Schlitz CastleBurg Schlitz im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsBurg Schlitz (Q1013886) in der Datenbank Wikidata a few kilometers south of Teterow. The historic house was built in the years 1806 - 1823 by Hans Graf von Schlitz, a very tolerant and liberal gentleman for his time. True to the motto "WWWV - Wishes Little, Acts Much", Graf Schlitz brought prosperity and work to the region. Graf Schlitz also kept lively contact with the poets and thinkers of his time - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe strolled through the breathtaking nature of the idyllic castle park and found inspiration for his works. Castle Schlitz is embedded in an 80-hectare park, the completion of which alone Lasted 50 years. Centuries-old trees, lakes, hidden ponds and extensive walking paths are scattered through the spacious grounds. A total of 36 monuments in the form of obelisks, grottos, columns and lakes line the paths. The monuments are also testimony to the life and work of Hans Graf von Schlitz: He dedicated them to loved and revered people of his time. A particular jewel of the park is certainly the Nymphenbrunnen, designed in 1905 by Walter Schott in Art Nouveau style, there are only a few such fountains worldwide. One is, for example, in Central Park in New York and one in Berlin, and the building itself now houses an elegant palace hotel. The guest rooms and suites are all spacious and equipped with exquisite furniture in Biedermeier style. Connoisseurs of fine cuisine will get their money's worth in the castle restaurant, which is located in the knight's hall.

Belitz manor house

How about a trip to the Mecklenburg Land around the turn of the century, to be more precise Belitz manor house in 1906? But always one after the other. It was in 1992 when Tilmann Bongardt and his family moved from East Friesland to Belitz and took over the grandfather's estate in order to practice agriculture - specifically arable farming. At that time his main focus was on building up the farm. The family moved into a detached apartment in the manor house, which at that time already gave some of the villagers a home. In the following years the manor house was vacated and the Bongardts were able to forge their first plans for the renovation of the building. A great moment for the now 100-year-old house dawned in 2003 when a television production selected the Belitz manor house as the backdrop for a television series because of its authenticity. Filming began the following year. Both structurally and in terms of equipment, the property was completely relocated to the time it was built around 1900. The actors in the television series "Adventure 1900 - Life in the Manor House" experienced first hand how difficult it is for modern people to live without electricity and running water. The success of the broadcast ensured that Belitz was again the location for "Adventure 1927 - Sommerfrische" a year later. Today, after registration, the landlady will personally guide you through the manor. Overnight stays are also offered during the summer. Depending on your taste and budget, you can stay in the stately apartments on the upper floor or in the servants' rooms in the basement.

The Gutshaus Gottin - "a mansion of simply beautiful style" built. In 1996, Linde Fritz from Stuttgart discovered this gem, which had been vacant since the 1980s. The house was renovated in the old style with great attention to detail. 26 guest beds, a library, a salon with a tiled stove, the wine cellar and the park café in the winter garden ensure a pleasant private atmosphere through and through. Culturally, exhibitions, readings and lectures round off the offer. The park of the manor is absolutely worth seeing. With around one hectare, only part of the park's formerly 5-hectare park is preserved, but what is lacking in size is made up for in quality. The large number of old and English roses that were planted during the renaturation of the park is impressive. The thematic weeks “Parks and historical roses”, which have been taking place regularly for many years, are of equal interest to experts and guests alike, the highlight of which is the Rose Festival in June.

The Mecklenburg Ice Age Geopark was opened in the summer of 2002. It is located in the southeast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and extends over an area of around 5000 km2. The Geopark has 9 action centers - one of which is Mecklenburg Switzerland. The retired teacher and hobby geologist Hermann Negnal opened one here in October 2002 on his private property in Hohen Mistorf Boulder garden and since then has been making a corresponding offer to guests and locals interested in geology. Igneous rocks belong to the bedrock inventory of the erratic garden. B. different types of granite; Metamorphic rocks such as gneiss or quartzite and various sediments. Visitors can view other types of stone in the exhibition showcases.

Lelkendorf is located on the northern edge of Mecklenburg Switzerland - halfway between Teterow and Neukalen. The Schnursteinquelle nature adventure park extends in its immediate vicinity. Here nature conservation, agricultural use and gentle tourism are linked. The core of this area is the Lelkendorf pet park. It's "beastly" here. Domestic animal breeds threatened with extinction such as woolly pigs, Pomeranian sheep and Hungarian steppe cattle are kept and bred here in a species-appropriate manner in family groups. About 60 animals live on an area of 20 hectares. The petting enclosure is very popular, especially with the younger guests.
