Theater District is a popular sector of Manhattan, To new York, located on the south side of Midtown. This area is actually more than just a cluster of cinemas, there are revitalized neighborhoods to the west and north of the main entertainment area.

Sometimes called Theater District Midtown West to distinguish it from "Midtown East".

Understand

The district stretches from 34th Street, through the highly commercial area at West 30th Street to 59th Street, beyond which is Central Park, and extends west of 6th Av. The west side contains not only the famous "Great White Way" (Broadway), but also an emerging business district centered around the now highly sanitized Times Square. Theater District is centered on the astonishingly mercantile "New" 42nd Street and orienting towards Broadway and 7th Avenue, mingling westward with the renovated district of Hell's Kitchen, "the kitchen of Hell", this famous neighborhood, also called Clinton, has many more or less poetic explanations for its name, and its commercial "scarf" on 9th Avenue, and north with the newer Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. The district becomes more and more residential as you travel north or north or west, and more commercial as you travel east and south. Many of Manhattan's largest hotels including the Hilton and Sheraton are located on 6th or 7th Avenue in this area.

By bus

Manhattan's main long-distance bus station is Port Authority Bus Terminal, between 8th and 9th Avenues between 40th and 42nd Streets. There are connections with commuter buses to the New Jersey and Rockland County, the rest of the state of new York and destinations further afield in the rest of the country and to the Canada.

By taxi

Taxis pass the area day and night but can find themselves driving at breakneck time, lunchtime and even around mid-afternoon. Note that if you need a taxi but the intricate workings of the alternative system are beyond your control, you'd better stick with Taxis Jaunes this time. The black limousine drivers will offer to pick you up but may overwhelm you.

There are usually so many tourists there, both not stopping, so if that annoys you or if you want to adopt a more sustained pace, you will just have to take the streets parallel to this area.

Around

While Theater District is clearly a favorite with tourists, its sanitized version of today will give you a picture of New York as close to reality as a Disney park's description of the historic Caribbean and Far West. If you really know how New Yorkers live, work, play, and find peace in the City that Never Sleeps, don't hesitate to visit instead Greenwich Village, the'East Village, Chinatown, Harlem, Upper west and Upper East, or just go up 9th Avenue.
