Themar is a lovely small town in Southwest Thuringia. The small town on the Werra is known nationwide due to the nearby Veßra monastery.

  • Marketplace with half-timbered town hall
  • Office building- Built in 1665 in the Franconian-Henneberg half-timbered house style. Today the building is the seat of the local history museum and tourist information.
  • Parts of the City wall with defense towers - 6 of 7 towers have been preserved

  • Worth seeing - The monastery is about 2 km southeast of Themar. The 6 hectare site is surrounded by a monastery wall. Some monastery buildings from the 16th century have been preserved. The still existing gatehouse with church dates back to the 12th century. The grave chapel of the monastery with wall paintings from the 15th century is also worth seeing. Incidentally, the monastery basilica burned down in 1939.
  • Cornerstones of the monastery history - The monastery was founded in 1131 as a Premonstratensian monastery. It experienced its heyday in the 13th century. Today a museum is housed on the monastery grounds. The former monastery is a national tourist destination in southern Thuringia.
  • Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra - The open-air museum shows half-timbered houses from the Hennberger Land. There is also a diverse exhibition program. further information: www.museumklostervessra.de
