This medieval fortress, which encircles a Renaissance gem, overlooks the river, perched on a rocky outcrop. To get there, you have to take a small road connecting Montignac to Les Eyzies and thus go back in time, in the heart of the Vallée de l'Homme, or slip aboard the boat of your choice on the river. Here, everything is peaceful. As soon as you arrive at the castle, you will discover its impressive defense system by passing over the moat via a dormant bridge leading to the châtelet. You then enter the main courtyard, a veritable balcony overlooking the Vézère, which is revealed beyond the main building. The lapping of the water is heard and takes the visitor into a dreamlike world. The presence in Périgord of the Beaulieu de Losse, then the Losse, has been attested since the XIe century. The castle, it would have been founded between the XIIe century and the 13the century. But the man on the site is undoubtedly John II de Losse. Born in 1504, he was a page of François Ier, served under Charles IX and made this home what it is today. It was in fact during this period that the large Renaissance building was built and the defensive quadrangle was modified. In Paris, the soldier owned a hotel in rue des Petits-Champs, near the Louvre. A member of the Privy Council, captain of the Scottish Guard, guardian of Henri IV, he wanted to update his Perigord home according to Italian influence. Entering the house, you climb a ceremonial, Roman-style staircase which, at the time, replaced the spiral staircase. Upstairs, in the escutcheon room, you can admire a superb adobe floor, characteristic of Périgord, made of stones embedded in a mortar. The visitor discovers, as he walks, furniture from the 16th and 17th centuries that evoke the living environment of the last Valois and the first Bourbons. From 1992, after the restoration of the buildings, the restoration of the gardens in the spirit of the Renaissance period was undertaken. You can walk there at will. They form a real showcase for the castle and are also listed as Historical Monuments and labeled "remarkable gardens". To the south, a terraced garden extends beyond the moat. These are green rooms, made of hedges. The whole surrounds a labyrinthine course and offers a new landscape on the castle and the river. On the other side, beyond the fortified gate, you reach the walls of the old fortress. We then take a path covered with wisteria and vines. The old battlements of the wall, which have disappeared in the redesigns of the site, are evoked by the design of the boxwood on the ground and the rose bushes which bloom all summer. Further on, we admire a large flowerbed planted with rosemary and lavender, the small canal of the Apollo and Venus fountain flows through various topiaries. And, above the river, the owner has imagined a boxwood knot garden, such as one finds in England. Finally, the visitor is invited to take the time to get lost at the bottom of the dry, planted and landscaped moats. Once again, the opportunity to walk along the Vézère and give free rein to your imagination.
