Itineraries

For those who want to visit the Top End, or the North of the Northern Territory it is preferable to dedicate at least 5 days but it would be more appropriate to extend it to 6/7 days.

The journey is about 600 km. It starts and arrives at Darwin and visit all the Kakadu National Park. There will be some walks to do even in the rocky places, so bring walking boots for a comfortable walk. The routes are of medium / easy difficulty.

It is recommended to take this route in the dry season, between May and October. In the rainy season, many of the attractions can only be reached by helicopter or plane. Also check the conditions of the roads [1] before leaving.

You can travel the route with a rented car (a Darwin), better in 4WD. Alternatively take a organized tour

Description and stages

  1. Arrival in Darwin, usually in the middle of the night. Get a good night's sleep and explore the city the next day.
  2. If you are in Darwin on the weekend, then go to some markets and to the beach. Stop for a beer and arrange a dinner by the port. Optionally, if you don't have much time, skip the second day in the city.
  3. Departure for Kakadu National Park. First stop at Corroboree Billabong looking for photos and crocodiles. Then do the Old Jim Jim Road (only in 4WD) and go towards the Barramundi Gorge for a bathroom. Stop at the campsite just outside the canyons
  4. Explore the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Center and then go to the most beautiful waterfalls in the park, the Jim Jim Falls is Twin Falls. Sleep at the nearby campsite.
  5. Third day a Yellow Water for a tour along the South Alligator river. So visit Nourlangie Rock Art for an in-depth study of Aboriginal art. Journey back to Darwin
  6. Last day in town to rest at Mindil Beach and in the resort pool or bckpacker accommodation.

As variations to the main itinerary you can add a day and sleep in Jabiru. In the morning leave for Litchfield National Park where you can spend the last day before returning to the city

Depending on the type of accommodation and tour, private or not, you can spend between $ 300 and $ 1000.
