History

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, several countries emerged that sought to declare their independence. This has been successful in many countries, but not in Transnistria.

Transnistria is not recognized by the international community as an independent country, but as part of Moldova. This is because Transnistria could only break away from Moldova with the support of Russia and it is believed that this is an attempt by the Russians to expand their power.
